B efore he m et w ith the m edia, before he was p rep p ed by secu rity guards c o n cern ed about the im age o f the T PC , W oods was asked w hat he saw on the sixth tee. “ A guy w ho got into som e kind o f sc u ffle ,” W oods said. “ He had a few c o c k ta ils, from w h a t I h e a rd .” A guy w ith a gun stash ed in his fanny pack. “ W h at?” he said in d isb e lie f. “ 1 d id n ’t know it was that b a d .” W ith P hoenix’s huge galleries, T ig er w as not alone in the d esert for long. This from a m an o f m u ltie th n ic d e sc e n t w h o has co m p lain ed o f death threats in the past. “ I still get them ,” W oods said w ith rem arkable calm. This is not the first tim e a fan w ith a firearm has been arrested in the v icin ity o f W oods. It happened in D allas five or six years ago, w hen W oods was an am ateur playing a p ra c tice round by himself. Two women w ere a rre ste d w ith guns in th e ir backp ack s, on th eir w ay to w here W oods was practicing. Som e day, the rough edges o f so ciety w ill get a clue. “ T h ere are d e fin ite ly som e crazy p eo ple out th e re ,” Payne Stew art said. “And there is a black and w hite issue out there. I t’s sad, but i t ’s the w ay it is. A s I understand it, T iger has had som e death threats before, w hich is why he has so m any secu rity g u ard s.” S adly, racism is an issue, and w hen it com es to harm ony and acceptance o f all colors, w ell, it’s no secret th at A rizona still has a factio n o f the W ild W est m ilitia Sheppard Quarterbacks Coach living inside its b o rders. People do stupid things w hen th e y ’re drunk. A nd th a t’s w hy i t ’s so scary. KIRKLAND, W A -T h e Seattle Seahawks named Mike Sheppard the teams quarterbacks coach, Mon day Sheppard, who will be in his sev enth NFL season in 1999, joins the Seahawks following two seasons as the San Diego Chargers’ offensive coordinator/wide receiver’s coach. “I’ve known Mike for a long time, dating back to B YU,” saidExecutive Vice President o f Football Opera- tions/General Manager & Head Coach Mike Holmgren. “He brings a tremendous amount o f passing- game expertise to the table and I feel extremely fortunate to add him to our staff here in Seattle.” Prior to his stint with the Charg ers, Sheppard served as the Balti more Raven’s wide receivers coach in 1996. Hespentfiveyears(1987-91) as the head coach at the Univeisioty ofNewMexico. Hewasalso the head coach at Long Beach State from 1984- 86 Sheppards other coaching stops include Kansas (1983) as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Long Beach State (1982) as quarter backs coach, Idaho State (1980-81) as quarterbacks and receivers coach, U.S. International (1979) as the of fensive coordinator/quarterbacks, Brigham Young(1977-78)asagradu- ate assistant and Cal Lutheran (1974- 76) as receivers coach. Sheppard, 4 7, graduated from Cal Lutheran, with a bachelor’s degree in business, where he was a two- sport star in football and baseball.
